 the project

  • The Renewstable® Kwale is being developed in Kwale County, in the coastal region of Kenya at an investment size of 500 M USD. HDF’s Renewstable® technology will provide stable and dispatchable green power thus adding stability to the grid in an area which currently has no installed electricity generation capacity.

  • The Renewstable® Kwale power plant will use local sources of clean energy to enhance domestic production of stable electricity, reducing exposure to transmission losses and imported fuels, associated price volatility and supply risks.

  • Kenya’s Vision 2030 agenda aims to realise 100 percent renewable electricity penetration by 2030 and accelerate Kenya’s green industrialization ambitions detailed in its Green Hydrogen Strategy and Road map launched at the Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi in September 2023. In addition, the country aims to grow the economy and taking advantage of green growth opportunities such as green hydrogen, and localization of low-carbon technologies as detailed in the country’s Energy Transition and Investment Plan (ETIP).

HDF Energy is committed to supporting these local and national ambitions by developing not only the first utility scale green hydrogen power plant in Kenya, the Renewstable Kwale® but also by:

  • Producing 100% green, stable baseload electricity in Kenya’s coastal region reducing Green House Gas emissions as well as,
essential ancillary grid services, increasing grid stability and savings on transmission losses,

  • Providing essential ancillary grid services, increasing grid stability and savings on transmission losses,

  • Constructing a green hydrogen refueling station, a first of its kind for Kenya which will enable the demonstration of green mobility.
